AVTR Houndstooth Rag Quilt Blog Tour

Hello there!!! It’s only been a couple of weeks since my last quilt post but I’ve been at it again! ¬†This time it was quite interesting ūüôā

This is the Houndstooth Rag quilt from A Vision To Remember. ¬†Bobbie was kind enough to mail out my favorite color (purple) from her fabric shop. ¬†The print is called Briar Rose¬†and it’s so lovely! ¬†The darker purple is from my own stash and the light pink is a cotton solid from Riley Blake. You can find both of those in her Etsy shop. ¬†Just follow the links! My purple didn’t quite match, but this quilt is for me….and the more purple the happier I am ūüôā

I didn’t have quite enough of the pink to make up the second fabric…so I improvised with the darker purple. ¬†It was actually easier than it looks! ¬†I cut everything out and made my blocks. ¬†Then I unpicked the ones that needed 3 fabrics, resewed with the correct color (pink or purple) and viola!

I would love to see each of the houndstooth as a different color! ¬†I think it would be a really cool rainbow quilt. For the boarder, I didn’t follow any directions. ¬†I made it up as I went…kinda in a log cabin style. ¬†There is a border option in the directions, though.

I thought I would need extreme hand holding from my quilting friends to make this, but I didn’t! ¬†So if you are looking to try something different give this one a go. ¬†It looks more intimidating than it actually was. ¬†I will warn you…..there is a TON of cutting. ¬†I hear there are special scissors for rag quilts. ¬†I do not own those so…. yes, I cut all of this with regular scissors. ¬†But I will be looking to invest in those special ones! ¬†I watched almost 2 movies to get it all cut. ¬†Try it!!! ¬†I would love to see what you make!!

Until next time,

What’s on my table Wednesday?

Hey friends! ¬†Yes, I know I missed 2 Wednesdays…sorry about that. ¬†Mr. Merri had to go out of town and then I came down with some crud that I’m sure my kiddos gave to me. But here we are today ūüôā

IMG_7399-1 Can you guess what this is???????

Yep! ¬†You’re correct! ¬†It’s Rapunzel! ¬†Evidently we are in full Rapunzel mode because this has been the most requested in the past week from my Etsy shop.

Rapunzeldress-1

Jenna was so little then and it really wasn’t THAT long ago! Not quite 2 years ago! These kids sure do grow fast. ¬†I will also be sharing some pictures of Miss H for a blog tour that is coming up soon. ¬†I’ll have to dig back into the archives and see just how much they have all grown up before our eyes..LOL

I’ve also been trying to tame those scraps…..AGAIN! ¬†That is almost a full time job taming the bags and bags of scraps.

IMG_7401-1 So I have found and pinned a few ideas to use them up.  I have a pinterest board called Quilting Beginnings if you want to check it out.

This particular scrap buster is from Hey, Let’s Make Stuff and this is a Bloomin’ Quilt-As-You-Go panel. ¬†My first attempt was ok. ¬†It doesn’t look quite as bloomin’ as her example but I’ll keep at it ūüôā ¬†I have waaaaay tooooo maaaaany scraaaaaps so I’m sure a few less than perfect will be just fine. ¬†I used the scraps you might have seen in some of my creations over time…..

So after I get a few of those made in between orders, I’ll have a new project to sew up! ¬†I’m not sure what it will be as of yet so if YOU have any ideas I would be happy to hear them ūüôā

Until next time,

Addy Mae wrap up

Last week, I shared pics of the Addy Mae blankets from the A Vision to Remember blog tour with you. I hope you enjoyed the blankets and the posts all week. Each one was unique in its own way. I love that about sewing- even when you are all using the same pattern, they all come out different!

While everyone else was busy sharing their blankets with you, I was busy at the machine sewing up my own blanket! I am in love with this one! I don’t know if I will list it for sale, gift it as a baby gift, or keep it for myself!

*The fabric and pattern for this quilt were provided to me by Bobbi, the designer behind A Vision to Remember, the opinions and fabric placement are all mine though*

I love that these blankets are quick to come together! One of the reasons…

Scraps continued…..

So, I’m the closest to being caught up ever on orders and guess what happens?¬† My machine throws a code. Bummer. Mr. Merri and I took it apart, cleaned it out very well (you should have SEEN the lint!…..Yikes!) but it only made the code change to ANOTHER code. Guess it will take a trip this week at some point to be serviced. Fingers crossed that it’s an easy fix.

So before all of this happened, I was working on a couple of blocks for my Harry Potter quilt. Here’s the latest….

I traded some fabric with a few fellow “Doomers” to add more magic to my quilt. Ashton and Hailey have been helping me pick fabric out for different blocks. I think all of the kids secretly want one of their own now that they can see this coming together.¬† I know that I’m definitely going to make another at some point….this has been way too much fun!

Scraps

The scraps have taken over!!!

So I have been at a loss as to what to do with all of the pieces left over from projects.¬† I have an entire drawer full of ruffled pieces to use on headbands, dress ruffle accents, bags, doll clothes, etc.¬† But I also have several bags and boxes of larger scrap pieces just sitting there.¬† Waiting. I don’t want to throw it all away because It’s definitely some pieces that can and should be used.¬† The teeny tiny small stuff, stuff that COULD be thrown away, is also put in a box for the cats to nest in.

Keeps them outta my stuff and their little fabric hoarder selves happy. I’ve also joined a quilting block swap and that has been really fun!¬† So far I have sent 2 sets of block out and I’m getting ready to mail the 3rd.

So, depending on what color they have requested, depends on how much of my scraps I can use. I have found a love of quilting AND I’m learning the RIGHT way of doing things.¬† Typically I just jump in, as in the case of then 1yr old Hailey’s log cabin quilt.¬† She is now 14!¬† I haven’t made a quilt since!¬† But this summer it’s on my to-do list and this is why….

I have always admired the quilts that have pictures.¬† Not actual pictures but the ones that are sewn together to look like something.¬† Little did I know that it’s called Paper piecing.¬† I have always thought how complicated this must be to cut all of those pieces! And how on earth they could sew some of them because of how ity-bity they are.¬† Boy, was I wrong.¬† It’s like putting together a puzzle but with FABRIC!¬† My 2 worlds have merged.¬† I can sit for HOURS putting together a puzzle.¬† It’s always been just one of those things left over from my childhood that I love.

I’m in a couple of sewing groups on fb and in one of them that I share my completed projects, kinda¬†a bragging rights of what you have been working on of sorts.¬† I stumbled across someone’s post about¬†The Project of Doom.¬† I’m not too active in this¬†group but just sharing when I have made and taken awesomesauce pictures and need an ego boost.¬† LOL So it’s kinda¬†odd that I saw the post at all.¬† What¬†IS The Project of Doom, you ask?¬† It’s a Harry Potter¬†paper piecing quilt-a-long!¬† OMG Jackpot!

I love those books and movies.¬† I’m not completely OBBSESSED but most likely when I’m sewing YOUR daughter’s dress or making¬†Your daughter’s hairbows, chances are I’m watching HP.¬†I have a couple of other¬†movies/tv shows I also watch on repeat¬†but probably 90% of the time, it’s HP. SOOOOO as¬†soon as I saw this, I had to make it!¬† For myself.¬† I never make anything for me.¬† Just me.¬† Sure I’ll share it with Mr. Merri and we can cuddle while watching some other movie but this is really just for me.

Block 1

All of the patterns were released in 2011 and the designer Jennifer has updated some for various reasons and is¬†being released on a weekly basis….since January 2015!¬† Oh no….I have to catch up!¬† They sew together quickly, IMO.¬† Yes, I have already had to use my seam ripper¬†to¬†adjust a couple of pieces.¬† But I’ve quickly learned how to avoid that!¬† Ya’ll know my adversion to seam ripping, right?¬† I like to sew it correct the FIRST time. I guess that’s where the¬†“practically perfect” resonates with me…LOL Or it could just¬†be my OCD showing. :p

Block 2

The designer has made all of the patterns FREE and has a great video tutorial of how to paper piece.  So if you have never tried this and always wanted to, check her out at fandom.com She has other awesome quilt blocks if you are not into HP.

Once I get all of the books made, I will go back and give them titles…exciting!!!! I’ll keep you updated on my progress but I just can not wait to see it all put together! !!!
